Aston Parents’ Association

The Parents’ Association at King Edwards Aston has been in continuous operation since 1938, not the first, but perhaps one of the oldest active Parents’ Associations in the country, we need your interest and support to maintain this fabulous tradition.

Parents’ Association Meetings

The Parents’ Association or PA is organised by a small Committee of 15 or so mums and dads.  We meet on the first Monday of each month, starting at 7.30pm at the Simpson Building at the King Edward Aston Sports Ground, 79 Trinity Road, Aston, B6 6LS where your boys have their games, lessons.

The meetings usually only last an hour and you are most welcome to join us at any time in the school year or at our AGM usually in November. For dates and more information see the Calendar below alternatively contact us at

PA Meetings and Events 2017-18 (Click here for Calendar)

The PA is basically a group of ordinary, parents of current boys and older “boys” who have now left Aston, who have offered up a little of their time to work with Mr Parker and Mrs Lewsey to support the School in many different ways but principally by raising money.  This money provides a fund for the equipment that would not be possible to purchase from the normal funding and current tight budgets.

It is also a great way for you to actively support King Edward VI Aston, a school we all recognise give our boys a first class education which will launch them into a bright future.

Match Day Parking

This is how we raise £18,000 – £20,000 a year for the boys……

We are extremely fortunate that the School is just a short walk from the Aston Villa Football Club ground.  At each home game we open up the School playgrounds for the ‘Match Day Parking.

Volunteering time to Help on Match Day Parking Rotas

You may have seen our slide show asking for your support in manning the match day parking scheme at the induction day in July.  Thank you if you have already given us your details but if not please still consider giving up a little of your free time just a couple of times over the year.

To offer help with the parking scheme at any time contact

We ask for Parent Helpers from all school years to maintain the car parking rota throughout the year, but we have experienced a noticeable decline in parent support over past couple of years and with upwards of twenty four matches a season to cover we really need your help.

We are committed to providing parking for over one hundred parking permit holders who have pre paid for a season pass to park with us all year.  We then supplement these with up to 100 additional “pay on the gate” places for home and visiting supporters.

What do you expect me to do?

We have one experienced shift leader who organises the two or three parent helpers per opening and per closing shift match. You would take money on the gate, check permits and park cars according to a tried and tested plan.  We only ask you to help out a couple of times a year and together we raise £20K..

Provision of Refreshments 7 to Yr 13 Parents Evenings

We also provide a welcome hot drink and refreshments during Parents’ Evenings, Open Days and run the refreshments and raffles at school music concerts, from which we raise a small income

We have Licensed Refreshments at the Christmas Music and Mince Pies concert and the Spring Term Jazz Concert as well as co-ordinating the food donations for the Festival of Cultures in July.

We have a small core of regulars, organised by Mrs Teresa Shukri but we always need more new parents to sign up to help on a regular basis. Sometimes the opportunity to help does not happen when your boys are in Yr 7,8 or 9 but only happens when the whole family are a little older and more independent.

Committee Meetings

Our Constitution says: The object of the Association is to advance the education of pupils in the School.

  • Develop extended relationships between Staff, Parents and others associated with the School.
  • Engage in activities that support the School and advance the education of pupils attending it.
  • Provide and assist in the provision of such facilities or items for education at the School (not provided from statutory funds) as the Committee (and very occasionally in consultation with the Governing Body) shall from time to time determine.
  • At no time shall the Association nor any section of the Association take action which, in the opinion of the Headmaster, will interfere with the normal running of the School.
How does the school spend the money raised?

We meet once a month to plan events and consider requests for funding from any school departments, consequently we make regular donations for a wide variety of equipment, big and small.

We also have an going commitments are made towards annual payments such as Personal Injury Insurance for each student, we also we provide mobile phones for sports fixtures and trips so that staff can maintain communication with the School.

We sponsor several academic prizes for the Annual Lower School Awards Ceremony and for the Senior School Speech days.  Members of our Committee, prepare the fabulous flower arrangements for this evening.  We also provide and maintain the Water Fountains around the School.

Festival Of Cultures

Traditionally every July the School holds a Festival of Cultures to celebrate and promote the ethnic diversity of our School. This is a day-long event with the students in Years 7 – 10 taking a variety of workshops during the day. These could be sporting, musical, drama, dance, artistic or even cooking with tutors brought in from a variety of backgrounds.

More about the Committee

The Parents’ Association is organised by a small committee that meets at 7.30pm on the first Monday each month at the Simpson Building at Trinity Road Sports Ground where the boys play Rugby,  unless the PA diary says it’s at school.

The Committee ensures that the refreshment counters and the parking scheme are staffed by both committee and volunteer parents.

It monitors the Association’ Bank Account and decides which projects within the School the money is directed to.  The meetings are informal but structured and you are welcome to join us any time in the year. They are attended by either the Headmaster or Deputy Headmaster.

The Association has a number of officers. These posts are currently held by:

Chair: Mrs Rachel Hawtin    (

Vice-Chair: Mr David Stanley

Treasurer: Mrs Keyna Parkin

Secretary: Mrs Sam Rahman

Parking Co-ordinator: Rachel Hawtin    (

Parking Permit Coordinator: Keyna Parkin   (

Head of Catering: Mrs Teresa Shukri

Minutes Secretary:  Mrs Raluca McQueen

The Parents’ Association is fortunate to be run by such a dedicated team.  Parents, who have busy work and family lives too, turn up and assist with early starting shifts at Parents’ Evenings, Parking Shifts and other events too.

Several members of the committee have seen their sons leave the School many years ago but continue to serve.  We know the School is extremely grateful to everyone that continues to make the Parents’ Association a vital aspect of King Edward VI Aston School.
