Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to encourage all pupils to be ambitious; learning in and beyond lessons and sharing our high expectations for them. Our curriculum fosters pupils’ curiosity and their confidence to embrace challenge. We will nurture pupils’ inspiration for subjects and teach them how to independently explore their learning and to take their learning further.
In years 7, 8 and 9 all pupils will study the full breadth of the curriculum including lessons in Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Technology, Design Technology and Food Technology, English with Drama, Geography, History, Mathematics, Music, Physics, Physical Education and Games, PSHEE, Religious Education and two languages from French, German and Mandarin.
In years 10 and 11 all students study the core subjects of Physical Education, Games and PSHEE and the GCSE subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Religious Education. They also have a choice of an additional three GCSEs from French, German, Mandarin, History, Geography, Art, Music, Computer Studies, Design Technology, and PE.
Most students stay on at Aston to continue their studies to A level. The options system is flexible to allow students to combine study of arts and sciences. In addition to subjects offered at GCSE, Economics, Further Mathematics, Psychology and Philosophy can be studied to A level. Art, Music, Sociology, French, Drama and Theatre Studies, German, and Government and Politics, are all taught collaboratively with King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School, King Edward VI Handsworth Boys’ and King Edward VI Handsworth Wood Girls’ Academy.
